the LAUREN ASHLEY TEAM

As a wedding photographer who’s captured hundreds of love stories, one of the most common questions I get from couples is, “Should we do a first look?” It’s a personal decision, but one that can significantly impact the flow, timing, and emotion of your wedding day. Let’s break down the first look pros and cons, so you can make the best choice for your vision, schedule, and heart.

First Look

What Is a First Look?

A first look is a private (or semi-private) moment between the couple before the ceremony, where they see each other for the first time in their wedding attire. It’s typically documented by your photographer and/or videographer and offers a chance to slow down and soak in the moment together, before the whirlwind begins.

First Look

Pros of Doing a First Look

1. More Emotional Intimacy

There’s something incredibly raw and real about seeing your partner before the ceremony in a quiet, uninterrupted space. You can laugh, cry, hug, kiss, and say everything you wouldn’t get to say at the altar.

2. More Time for Photos

A first look allows us to take many of your portraits, bridal party, and even family photos before the ceremony. This means you’ll have more time to actually enjoy cocktail hour and be present with your guests.

3. Less Nerves Before the Ceremony

Seeing each other ahead of time often eases wedding-day jitters. Many of my couples tell me they felt instantly calmer after the first look and were able to be more emotionally present during the ceremony.

4. Smoother Timeline

Logistically, first looks help create a buffer. If things are running late (as they sometimes do), we can still get essential photos done early, saving you stress later in the day.

Cons of Doing a First Look

1. Breaks Tradition

For some, there’s something sacred about seeing your partner for the first time as you walk down the aisle. If you’re deeply tied to that traditional moment, skipping the first look may be the right call for you.

2. Earlier Start Time

To make room for the first look and pre-ceremony photos, your day may start earlier, especially for hair and makeup. This can mean a longer day overall.

3. Lighting Differences

Depending on your timeline and the season, doing photos early in the day may mean harsher light (especially midday sun). As your photographer, I always scout for the best light and shady spots, but it’s something to consider.

4. Less Build-Up to the Aisle Moment

If you’ve already seen each other, that dramatic aisle reveal can sometimes feel less impactful. (Though trust me—many couples still cry at the ceremony even with a first look!)

First Look

So… Should You Do One?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. There are make other first look pros and cons.
Here’s what I tell my couples:

  • If you value a relaxed timeline, emotional privacy, and maximizing your time together, go for the first look.
  • If you’re drawn to tradition, want to preserve that aisle reveal, and don’t mind squeezing in photos later, skip it.

Either way, I’ll help you build a timeline that works beautifully for your vision.

Final Thoughts from Your Photographer

I’ve photographed stunning weddings with and without first looks, and both can be equally emotional and unforgettable. The key is choosing what feels most authentic to you.

No pressure, no rules, just what makes your heart feel full.

If you’re still unsure, I’m always happy to chat through the timeline with you and help you weigh what works best for your day. We can discuss the first look pros and cons for your big day!
