Some love stories begin with perfect timing. Maria and Mark’s began because a group of determined friends refused to let Maria stay single. After years of insisting she was perfectly content on her own, Maria’s friends took matters into their own hands. They created a Bumble profile for her, swiped yes on Mark, and scheduled a date before she even had the chance to say no.Three years later, that spontaneous decision let them to a luxurious Greek Wedding at Empress Events.
Their relationship was built during seasons of both joy and heartbreak. Looking back, Maria describes Mark as the peace she never knew she needed.
“Unknowingly, Mark asked me to become his girlfriend on the eve of one of the hardest days of my life, the anniversary of losing my dad. Years later, again unknowingly, he asked me to become his wife on the second most difficult day, Father’s Day Eve.”
Planning the proposal wasn’t easy. Maria was deep into an intensive Nurse Practitioner program with almost no free time, making it nearly impossible for Mark to schedule anything special. Determined to make it happen, he booked a spontaneous boat cruise and insisted she keep the date open, even recruiting her mom to make sure she didn’t cancel.
On Father’s Day Eve in 2025, surrounded by the water and completely caught by surprise, Mark asked Maria to marry him.
For Maria, the proposal became something far greater than a beautiful moment.
“In the small moments, I realized my dad had sent me this human to provide the peace and comfort my soul had been missing.”
For Mark, it has always been much simpler.
“It’s the way she makes me smile and laugh. The little things she does that make me want to kiss her. The chemistry between us is something you can just feel.”
A Wedding Filled with Family, Tradition, and 300 People Cheering Them On
Their wedding day at Empress Events was everything they had imagined, and more.
Walking into the ballroom for the very first time, seeing every detail brought to life exactly as they had dreamed, stopped them in their tracks.
“It completely took our breath away. We both just stood there crying.”
Lauren Ashley and Mallory were there to quietly document every genuine reaction, preserving the emotions that unfolded naturally before the celebration even began.
For Maria, Empress Events wasn’t simply a beautiful venue.
It was deeply personal.
As one of Chicago’s most iconic Greek wedding venues, Empress had long been part of her family’s story. Her father had built a wonderful relationship with the owners over the years, and throughout the planning process they cared for Maria and Mark as though they were family themselves.
That love could be felt in every corner of the day.
Then came the grand entrance.
“It was epic. We worked so hard to get to that point. When those doors opened, it felt like everything shifted. It was finally time to celebrate.”
As over 300 family members and friends erupted into cheers, Maria and Mark were overwhelmed by the realization that every person in the room had gathered to support their marriage.
It was one of those rare moments that can only be experienced, never recreated.
Advice for Future Couples
Having experienced such an unforgettable wedding day themselves, Maria and Mark offer one piece of advice they wish every engaged couple would hear.
Keep your wedding party small.
“It sounds simple, but trust us.”
More importantly, intentionally create quiet moments throughout the day where it’s just the two of you.
A wedding moves incredibly fast. Between greeting guests, taking photos, and hosting over 300 people, it’s easy to spend the entire day together without ever truly being alone.
“Remember, it’s your day. Fifty years from now, you won’t remember what appetizers were served during cocktail hour. You’ll remember the quiet moments you shared with your person.”
The Beginning of Their Next Chapter
Just two weeks before saying “I do,” Maria and Mark closed on their very first townhome together.
After the celebration ended, they didn’t leave for a luxury resort or an overseas honeymoon.
They went home.
Home to the place where their marriage would begin.
Now they’re focused on building a life together, creating a home filled with love, continuing to grow alongside one another, and, one day, welcoming little human copies of themselves into the family.
Sometimes the greatest adventures don’t begin across the world.
Sometimes they begin with a front door, two wedding rings, and the person who feels like home.
