Every winter we have some beautiful expecting mothers , but it is rare when my maternity clients choose to do their session outdoors. Let me tell you, unless it’s minus 20 degrees outside, I love shooting outdoors! There is so much variety with an outdoor session in terms of location and scenery and I have lots of tips and tricks to ensure you stay warm between poses. There’s just something so magical about the freshly fallen snow, ice sticking to the trees and the hazy winter air, and it makes for a perfect portrait!
Tips for a Winter Maternity Shoot
- Go bold with color. A red, emerald or deep blue gown pops against snow and grey winter light.
- Plan around early sunsets. Winter’s best light comes in late afternoon, so we start earlier than in summer.
- Stay warm between poses. Bring a long coat or blanket, keep hand warmers in your pockets, and park close by so we can shoot in short bursts.
- Book for 28–34 weeks. Your bump is showing beautifully, and you’re still comfortable moving around outside.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it too cold for an outdoor maternity session?
Unless it’s twenty below, no. We work in short bursts and warm up in between. If you’d rather stay inside, here are our favorite indoor photoshoot locations in Chicago.
What should I wear?
A flowing gown in a rich solid color, with thermal layers underneath that the camera never sees. See more family and maternity sessions.
