the LAUREN ASHLEY TEAM

When you’re investing in a high-end wedding experience, your photographer is more than just a vendor, they’re your memory-keeper, your calm in the chaos, and often the only person by your side from the quiet getting-ready moments to the last dance. But how do you choose the one behind the lens? This is a a list of 20 questions to ask your photographer before signing the contract!

Here are essential questions, with expert-level insight, to help you find a photographer whose vision, personality, and professionalism align with your once-in-a-lifetime celebration.

1. What is your photography style, and can I see full galleries, not just highlights?

Photographers often describe their style as photojournalistic, editorial, light and airy, or moody and cinematic. But style is more than buzzwords, it’s about how your day is captured emotionally and artistically.

Why it matters: You need to see full galleries , not just Instagram-perfect moments, to assess how they handle every part of the day, from harsh sunlight during portraits to dimly lit receptions. Consistency is key.

2. Do you specialize in weddings and how many do you shoot per year?

Weddings are fast-paced, emotional, and unpredictable. A true wedding specialist knows how to pivot gracefully, manage time, work with planners, and anticipate the moments before they happen.

3. What’s your approach to directing versus documenting?

Some photographers pose everything. Others are completely hands-off. The best ones (especially in the luxury space) blend subtle direction with candid observation, guiding you just enough to create natural, emotionally rich imagery.

Pro tip: Ask for examples of how they handle moments like the first look, family portraits, and reception entrances.

4. Have you photographed at our venue before or do you scout in advance?

Familiarity with your venue is helpful, but not required. What matters more is their ability to adapt to lighting and layout on the fly. A luxury photographer will usually arrive early to scout or schedule a walkthrough beforehand.

5. How do you handle low-light situations or unexpected weather?

This is where gear, training, and creativity collide. Rain, snow, candlelit ceremonies, and dark dance floors are no excuse for poor photos.

What to ask:

  • Can you show examples of low-light receptions or rainy-day weddings?
  • Do you bring off-camera lighting or assistants?

6. Who will actually be photographing my wedding?

If you’re working with a studio, make sure you meet the lead photographer who will be shooting your day. Look at their portfolio and make sure you feel comfortable with their personality and energy.

7. How do you build the wedding timeline, and do you collaborate with my planner?

An experienced photographer doesn’t just show up, they help design the flow of your day. They’ll work with your planner to create a timeline that allows for breathtaking portraits without rushing the real moments.

8. Do you offer a second photographer or assistant?

A second shooter captures alternate angles, groom coverage, and more candid moments, especially during split-location getting-ready or large weddings. An assistant helps with gear and lighting, keeping the day smooth and stress-free.

9. What’s your policy on family photo lists?

Formal portraits are important. But they can also become overwhelming. A great photographer will request a limited, prioritized list in advance, assign someone to help gather family members, and keep things moving efficiently.

10. How do you handle image backups and file security?

This is non-negotiable. Ask how many memory cards they shoot to (dual card slots are a must), where files are backed up (on-site and cloud-based), and how long they’re stored after delivery.

11. What kind of editing do you offer?

Editing style varies wildly. Some photographers only apply basic color correction, while others offer detailed retouching.

Clarify:

  • Are skin blemishes or flyaways removed?
  • Are background distractions edited out?
  • Is retouching included or an add-on?

12. What’s your turnaround time for sneak peeks and the full gallery?

Luxury photographers often offer a few sneak peeks within 48–72 hours and a full gallery in 6–12 weeks. Rush edits may be available for an additional fee.

Ask how and when you’ll receive your images, via online gallery, USB, or album design meeting.

13. Do you help with album design and printing?

Heirloom albums are a tangible legacy, not just files on a screen. A high-end photographer will guide you through curation, layout, and material options to create a custom-designed album worth passing down for generations.

14. Can we add rehearsal dinner or welcome event coverage?

If you’re planning a multi-day celebration, ensure your photographer offers additional coverage or packages that include rehearsal dinners, welcome parties, or farewell brunches, often with a more documentary, relaxed approach.

15. Do you carry liability insurance and proper business licensing?

Many venues require proof of liability insurance, and a seasoned photographer should be able to provide it easily. This also shows they’re a legitimate, professional business, not a weekend hobbyist.

16. What’s your payment structure and cancellation policy?

Ask about retainer fees, payment schedules, and refund policies. Make sure it’s all outlined in your contract.

Bonus tip: Find out what happens if your photographer is sick or has an emergency. Do they have a vetted backup?

17. How do you help clients feel comfortable in front of the camera?

Photographers should be part director, part therapist. You want someone who puts you at ease, hypes you up, and knows how to bring out the real you.

Ask how they work with camera-shy couples, or people who “don’t like how they look in photos.”

18. What sets you apart from other photographers in your price range?

This gives the photographer a chance to tell their story, their why. The best answers won’t just be about gear or awards, they’ll talk about how they make people feel and how they deliver an unforgettable experience.

19. Do you help with shot ideas or Pinterest boards?

While you shouldn’t expect exact recreations, your photographer should be open to your vision. Instead of copying Pinterest shots, a luxury photographer will translate your inspiration into personalized, meaningful images that still feel editorial.

20. Can I read recent testimonials or speak to a past client?

Any photographer can write a great bio. What you want is social proof, real words from past clients about how the photographer handled emotional moments, time crunches, family dynamics, and more.
